Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)

Both children and adults can suffer from a mental restlessness that inhibits concentration and learning. Known as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), this problem can cause difficulty with decision making, task completion, forgetfulness, being easily distracted, lack of concentration, hyperactivity and impatience.

Ritalin, a psychostimulant drug which acts on the brain but more specifically in the prefrontal cortex of the brain is the most commonly prescribed medication for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), also called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The primary ingredient in Ritalin is methylphenidate hydrochloride, which is similar in structure to amphetamines. Therefore, methylphenidate produces therapeutic effects similar to those of the amphetamines which stimulate the central nervous system.

Methylphenidate acts by blocking the reuptake of the neurotransmitters, dopamine, and norepinephrine from the synapses of neurons. It does this by binding to the transporters responsible for removing these neurotransmitters from the synapses.

The second mechanism of action of methylphenidate is its ability to stimulate the release of dopamine and norepinephrine from brain cells into the synapses. Lastly, methylphenidate increases the amount of dopamine released (and, therefore, the magnitude of response) after each stimulus.

Paradoxically, with ADHD the drug has a calming effect, apparently because it stimulates parts of the brain that regulate activity and attention. Children and adults with ADHD use Ritalin to improve alertness, combat fatigue and increase attention span. While effective, the long-term effects of this drug are not known.

There are natural alternatives to Ritalin for those who want to avoid the chemical side-effects and unknown risks.

Focus Attention by Nature’s Sunshine is a safe, natural formulation that can be taken by both adults and children to help support the psychological anxiety and apprehension that often precedes important activities such as exams, interviews, and speaking engagements, while simultaneously helping to promote mental clarity, acuity and focus.

The time-tested herbs, nutrients and powerful neurotransmitter precursors in this blend help support over-stimulated and undernourished brains function more effectively and help to lessen the various physiological problems commonly occurring in those with concentration problems.
