Vitamin E

Vitamin E

In this article we look into the benefits of vitamin E for the skin. As the saying goes “many things improve with age, unfortunately our skin isn’t one of them. Wrinkles, brown spots and general dullness often start to materialise as the years tick by.

Successful aging involves physical, mental and social well-being, along with a diet rich in nutrients, vitamins, minerals, amino-acids, enzymes and inflammation-slaying antioxidants. When skin is nourished from both the inside and outside, it will help fight signs of aging and support skin’s health and ability to repair itself.

Of the four major antioxidant nutrients (vitamin A and β-Carotene (pro-vitamin A), vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium), vitamin E has been the most studied, and is one of the most potent. It has long been known that antioxidants fight the effects of free radicals and do much to slow the aging process and prevent various types of disease.

Vitamin E, often referred to as the skin life saver, is actually not a single entity, but rather a lipid (fat) soluble micronutrient containing a collective of eight active, naturally occurring plant constituents — four tocopherols (alpha, beta, delta, gamma) and four tocotrienols (alpha, beta, delta, gamma). Collectively, these compounds are known as vitamin E. Researchers have determined that the biologic functions of tocopherols and tocotrienols appear unrelated, thus indicating a need for both.

One of the primary benefits of vitamin E lies in its ability to heal the skin naturally. According to a 2014 review published in the International Wound Journal, this nutrient accelerates wound healing by modulating gene expression and cellular signaling. It also has positive effects on connective tissue growth factor, leading to faster tissue repair and regeneration.

Because of its versatility and safety, vitamin E can be found in face creams, moisturisers and many other skin care products. Below outlines some key areas this powerful antioxidant benefits the skin.

Anti-aging
Topical application of vitamin E promotes production of two important protein components namely, collagen and elastin that improve skin elasticity. This in turn helps to reduce the appearance of visible age spots, fine lines and wrinkles and helps to provide a younger-looking skin.

Repairs Damaged Skin
Vitamin E benefits skin by strengthening the capillary walls and improving moisture and elasticity, acting as a natural anti-aging nutrient. Studies have shown that vitamin E reduces inflammation, helping maintain healthy, youthful skin. The antioxidant properties are also helpful when you are exposed to cigarette smoke or ultraviolet rays from sunlight, helping to protect against skin cancer.

Age Spots
Age spots appear as dark blotches or spots of hyperpigmentation on the skin of the face and body. Using vitamin E has been shown to help reduce the appearance of dark spots on the skin when applied daily.

Wound healing
Vitamin E is very helpful in the healing of wounds after a scab has formed. Applied topically on a regular basis to a wound that has already closed can also inhibit scar formation.

Scar Treatment
Regularly applying vitamin E to a scar, may reduce the scar's appearance over time. It is often recommended by dermatologists and other skin professionals as one of the few potential ways to treat permanent skin marks without surgery. Its possible action may be due to its ability to penetrate the skin and reduce the formation of free radicals (which interfere with healing).

Burn Treatment
Vitamin E is effective in treating burns.  Although serious or large burns need to be treated by a medical professional, vitamin E can help heal minor burns quickly and with minimal scarring. Vitamin E's antioxidant properties moisturise and soothe the burned area and has some antibiotic properties, which make it safe to apply to blistered skin and effective in preventing infection.

Makeup Remover
Vitamin E cream can be used as a cleanser as it takes off all traces of eye and face make up easily and gently, leaving skin looking brighter and fresher. It is really kind on the eyes and does not sting like some removal products can.
